On a more personal note, it is my hope that I can share my understanding for something that has been an important part of my life. I was fortunate enough to have grown up traveling throughout Alaska. In my youth my family built a log cabin 120 air miles from the nearest road (see the photo on the cover, and me, chinking logs, bottom left). In the summer of 1974 we trekked over the Chilkoot Pass, and put kayaks in at the headwaters of the Yukon River to paddle 2000 miles to the Bering Sea.

This was the foundation of the respect I have — call it a relationship if you will— for this magnificent land that I enjoy sharing with others.
